Indian Cardinal Ivan Dias Called to Eternal Rest

Vatican: The Archdiocese of Mumbai announced the sad demise of His Eminence Ivan Cardinal Dias, Archbishop Emeritus of Mumbai and the most senior Cardinal from India on 19 June 2017.

Cardinal Dias was born on 14 April 1936 in Mumbai and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Bombay on 8 December 1958. He held a doctorate in Canon Law from Pontifical Lateran University, Rome. In 1964 he entered in the Diplomatic Service of Vatican and served in many countries. He was appointed titular Archbishop of Rusubisir and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Ghana, Togo and Benin on 8 May 1982. Then he served Apostolic Nuncio in Korea (1987-91) and Albania (1991-97). On 8 November 1996 he was appointed Archbishop of Bombay. He was created Cardinal by Saint Pope John Paul II on 21 February 2001. In the same year, the new Cardinal was also appointed President Delegate of the 10th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops held in Rome in October 2001. He was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and Grand Chancellor of the Pontifical Urbanian University, Rome on 20 May 2006. He served this post until 10 May 2011. Funeral will be held later.
