Saint Teresa of Calcutta: Saint for Divine Mercy

Posted On:08/09/2016

Vatican:  The  Holy Father Pope Francis canonically enlisted Mother Teresa of Calcutta among the saints of the  Catholic Church 4 September 2016. The  Canonization ceremony of the Albanian-born nun was received with great applauds by thousands of pilgrims from all over the world, gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Vatican. During the Solemn Holy Mass, speaking in Latin, Pope Francis declared: “after due deliberation and frequent prayer for divine assistance, and having sought the counsel of many of our brother bishops, we declare and define Blessed Teresa of Calcutta to be a saint, and we enroll her among the saints, decreeing that she is to be venerated as such by the whole church.” A huge portrait of Mother Teresa, whom the church credits with having performed two miraculous cures of the sick, hung from St. Peter’s Basilica during the colorful ceremony.

During the homily, Pope Francis  praised Mother Teresa, as a “ emblematic figure of womanhood and of consecrated life.” Holy Father Continued: “Mother Teresa, in all aspects of her life, was generous dispenser of divine mercy, making herself available for everyone through her welcome and defense of human life, those unborn and those abandoned and discarded... She bowed down before those who were spent, left to die on the side of the road, seeing in them their God-given dignity. She made her voice heard before the powers of this world, so that they might recognize their guilt for crime of poverty they created.”
For the newly-sainted Teresa, he said, “mercy was the salt which gave flavor to her work, it was the light which shone in the darkness of the many who no longer had tears to shed for their poverty and suffering…  Her holiness is so near to us, so tender and so fruitful that with great spontaneity, I think we will continue to call her Mother Teresa.”

The Canonization of the winner of Nobel Prize and Bharata Ratna was received with great joy all over the world and particularly by the Indian Society. The Government of India expressed its joy by sending an official delegation headed by Smt. Sushama Swaraj, honourable Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of India for the Indian Church, it was a blessed moment. His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos (President of CBCI), His Beatitude Cardinal George Alenchery, His Eminence Cardinal Oswald and His Eminence Cardinal Telesphore Topo and many bishops, priests, religious and faithful were present at Vatican to witness this blessed occasion.

The Feast of St. Teresa of Calcutta falls on 5 September every year.
