The Synodal Commission for Theology of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church conducted its fifth Theological Colloquium at St. Mary’s Malankara Seminary, Nalanchira from 15 to 16 November 2012. The Colloquium started with an Inaugural Programme, presided over by His Excellency Most Rev. Abraham Mar Julios, the Chairman of Theological Commission. Rev: Fr. Cherian Kottayil, the Secretary of the Synodal Commission for Theology welcomed all participants and presented the theme of the Colloquium“the Year of Faith and the New Evangelization in the pluralistic context of India, particularly in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church”. His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis inaugurated the Colloquium by lighting the lamp. During the inaugural address, Cardinal-Designate Catholicos said that it is a challenge to reveal the beauty of Christianity to the world dormant with a variety of traditions and culture. India with a variety of cultures can come to know Jesus Christ in their own way. His Beatitude added that we should try to transmit Christ to the people like the Blessed Mother Teresa without any coercion. She saw Christ in all people. This is what the Church aims at through New Evangelization.
During the first Session Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Dabre, Bishop of Pune, presented the first paper on “New Evangelization in the Pluralistic Context of India”. It was followed by the presentation by Rev. Dr. Philip Chempakassery (Dean, St: Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary) on “Faith Formation and Vatican II in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church’’. His Excellency Most Rev. Abraham Mar Julios, (Chairman, Theological Commission) was the moderator of the first session. The first day was concluded with an audio visual ”In the Beginning”.
The second day of the Colloquium started with the Second Session moderated by Mr. Francis Mangalath (Resident Manager, Deepika, Trivandrum). The first presentation was by His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Vincent Mar Paulos (Bishop of Marthandom) on “Becoming an Evangelized Evangelizing Malankara Catholic Church: An appraisal on Its Challenges and Possibilities. It was followed by the presentation by Prof. Jacob M. Abraham (President, the Catholic Federation of Kerala) on “ Lay Involvement in the Transmission of Faith in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church after the Vatican II”.
The Third Session was moderated by Rev. Sr. Hridya SIC (Prof. St. Mary’s Malankara Major Seminary). Rev. Dr. Varghese Thykkoottathil OIC (Prof. Bethany Vedavinjana Peeth, Pune) presented the first Paper of this session on “Transmission of Faith through the Liturgical Renewal of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church in the Milieu of New Evangelization”. The paper on “Transmission of Faith through the New Media” was presented by Rev. Fr. Joseph Mundackal (Asst. Prof. Journalism, Mar Ivanios College, Trivandum). This session was followed by a group discussion and general evaluation moderated by His Excellency Most Rev. Abraham Mar Julios.
The Colloquium concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. John T. Abraham, Thevarathu (Member, Synodal Commission for Theology). Around 300 participants including His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis Catholicos, Most Rev. Abraham Mar Julios, Most Rev. Vincent Mar Paulos, many priests, religious, seminarians and lay representatives from various eparchies attended the Colloquium. It was successfully organized by the Synodal Commission for Theology under the leadership of Most Rev. Dr. Abraham Mar Julios (Chairman) and Rev. Fr. Cherian Kottayil (Secretary).
