A Tailor Called to Priesthood

Posted On:17/01/2017

Neyyatinkara:  The one who stitched beautiful cloths for others is now vested with the Liturgical vetaments to celebrate the Eucharist. It is the wonderful story of a tailor man called to priesthood. As Rev. Godwin Christo raised the Chalice in his hands at the age of 43 at St. Mary’s Malankara Syrian Catholic Church, Panayarackal, Neyyattinkara on 15 January 2017, the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church witnessed the wonderful ways how the Lord chosen people for his service in the Church. Godwin Christo, the sixth son of Mr. Christudas and Jessy, had chosen tailoring as a means of his livelihood. For 12 years he was running a tailoring shop nearby his home parish with his brother to support his poor family. As the rhythm of the tailoring machine was resonating in his ears he realized the divine call to priesthood in his heart and thus he joined the Bethany Ashram, a religious order in the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church leaving his profession at the age of 29 in 2003. The authorities in the Ashram, recognizing his vocation as genuine, admitted him to the formation which lasted 13 years. His dream became a reality when His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the Major Archbishop of Syro-Malankara Catholic Church by holding his hands said: “the holy Spirit invites you to become a priest in the holy Church.” Together with other Bethanians he was ordained a priest by His Beatitude for the Navajeevan Province of the Order of Imitation of Christ (Bethany Ashram) on 7 January 2017. He offered the First Holy Qurbono on 15 January, 2017.
