Indian Bishops Approve Action Plan for Dalits

Posted On:15/12/2016

Delhi: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India released the action plan to empower the Dalits druing a function at CBCI Centre, New Delhi, on 13 December 2016. Speaking on the occasion, His Beatitude Moran Mor Baselios Cardinal Cleemis Catholicos, the President of CBCI said, “Viewing the discrimination against Dalit is a problem as well as a sin. Hence this new document proposes a self-criticism to all concerned."

The document says that the Dalits are squeezed in between the Government and the Church. The denial of reservation in Government job opportunities is an injustice from the part of secular society. Among the 19 million Catholics in India 12 million are Dalits.  In the Church also they are deprived of justice. The document declares that the division of the society on the basis of caste is a social evil. Hence it proposes certain action plans for the empowerment of Dalits at the diocesan level.

1. Needs timely plan to abolish untouchability and discriminations in all places including the Church and the cemeteries.

2. Any action based on caste should be stopped.

3.The Dalit Christians should be given proportionate reservation in all Councils like Educational Boards, Economical Councils and Council for Appointments at the Diocese and the Parish levels.

4. Inter-caste marriages are to be promoted with more benefits.

5. Special consideration should be given to the Dalit students who seek admission in CBSE schools. The reservation should be given in higher educational institutions for them. Hostel facilities should be ensured in the metropolitan cities for them.
