Vatican: Holy Pope Francis closed the Holy Door of St Peter’s Basilica to mark the closing of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy on the day of the feast of Christ the King 20 November 2016. Pope insisted, “We have received mercy in order to be merciful. Even if the Holy Door closes, the true door of mercy which is the heart of Christ always remains open wide for us.”
The Pope and the new cardinals first went to the atrium of St. Peter's Basilica and gave thanks for "the gifts of grace received" during the Holy Year. Pope Francis then went to the threshold of the Holy Door and pulled each side shut.
After closing the Holy Door in St. Peter’s Basilica, “the last one open in the world” the Pope processed to the square outside to celebrate the Solemn Holy Mass. Thousands of faithful participated in it. His Beatitude Baselios Cardinal Cleemis, the Major Archbishop-Catholicos and His Excellency Jacob Mar Barnabas, the Bishop of Guragon-Delhi participated in the Holy Eucharist.
The door will be sealed until the next Holy Year, which is likely to be 2025.
