New Eparchy for the Syro- Malabar Church in Britain

Kochi: His Holiness Pope Francis has erected a new eparchy for the Syro-Malabar Christains in Great Britain. Rev. Fr Joseph Srampickal of the eparchy of Pala has been appointed the first bishop of the newly formed Eparchy. He has been serving as Vice Rector of the Pontifical Urban College De Propaganda Fide, Rome since 2013.

Holy Father appointed Msgr Stephen Chirapanath of the eparchy of Irinjalakkuda as the apostolic visitator to the Syro-Malabar Christians in Europe. Until now he has been serving as the ecclesiastical procurator of the Syro-Malabar Church in Rome.

The announcement was made by His Beatitude Cardinal George Alencherry, the Major Archbishop of Syro- Malabar Church at Mount St Thomas, Kakkanad on 28 July 2016, along with that of in Vatican. Mar Joseph Kallarangat (Bishop of Pala), Mar Pauly Kannookakadan, (Bishop of Irinjalakkuda) and Mar Jose Puthenveetil (Auxiliary Bishop, Archieparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly) were also present.
